Instructions
- After printing out the reference sheets, you will first need to trace over the Tree image.
Using a pencil, draw over all the outlines on the printed side, pressing quite firmly. - Position the page on your sketchbook, drawn side down (make sure it’s the right way round).
Then, firmly scribble over the reverse of the image to transfer the pencil markings of the tree onto your page. - Now you will have a beautiful tree transferred to your page, all ready for the owls to sit comfortably on the top branch.
You might like to go ‘off piste’ here and add other birds, or just one larger owl, but I have gone for three decreasing sized owls, representing a little owl family.
Don’t worry too much about detail for now, as we are just creating outlines to paint around. - Once you are happy with your owl shapes, get ready to mix a lovely inky blue acrylic paint for the background midnight-blue sky.
Start with a thin brush going around all the wobbly branches of the tree (don’t worry if you go over a few lines, it really won’t matter). - Then, using your larger brush, cover the rest of the background with your gorgeous dark blue paint.
You might like to pop some scrap paper under the page so you can paint the edges of the sketchbook more freely. - Once the background is painted, you can now either leave the tree white (this looks really effective too) or paint it with brown Gouache paint, if painting, it looks great if you add a darker brown gouache on top of the paler brown to replicate the gnarly bark of the tree.
- Next, it’s time for the owls! Really light and bright colours work best, so they really stand out against the blue. Use Gouache paints so that they sit happily on top of the plastic base of the Acrylic and also, so that we can embellish them further using coloured pencils.
There are some lovely owls on the reference sheet to copy, it might be nice to create your own by using different elements from different owls. - Once you are happy with your owls, leave them to dry before adding more detail with pen or pencil.
- Whilst you are waiting, you can start on the blossom.
Mix a lovely pale pink, blue or yellow and cover the tree with blossom, so fun to do!
You might like to add darker dots for the inside of the flowers, or even some little streaks in the petals, have a look at the reference sheets for inspiration. - Next, if you wish, add some fine liner to the Owl’s eyes, or some coloured pencils to their wings and body, again, check out the reference for ideas.
And there you have it, a stunning nighttime scene, I love how although there is a template, everyone’s looked so different, so I really can’t wait to see your midnight, blossom filled scenes.
Have fun! xxxx

Community
One of the best things about being part of Sketchbook Club, is the fabulous way we can all show each other our Sketchbook pages. It’s so wonderful to get instant feedback about your artwork, not only is it hugely confidence building (very important!) but it is also a great way to ask people’s opinions and seek advice.
This module’s Instagram hashtag is #SketchbookClubOwls.
You might like to check out everyone else’s pages for inspiration before you start…
