Instructions

  1. Using the reference sheets for the buildings, start your drawing in the bottom left hand corner of your sketchbook.
Treat it like a relaxing doodle, don’t think too much about what you’re drawing. If you’re drawing in pencil before using your fine liner, you should be even more relaxed! Add as much detail as possible at black ink stage, lots of little windows, roof tiles, fences, etc. – really have some fun with it. Remember it’s an illustration and it is yours and only yours, when you have finished I think you will be really surprised by how sweet and charming your drawing looks.
  2. Once you are happy with the black line drawing of your buildings, it’s time to mix the paint.
Start with a dollop of white, then add a generous blob of blue next to the white (by it, not on it). Gradually add a little blue bit by bit to the white until you are happy with the tone (think of it like gradually adding spices to a soup). Now add a really small touch of yellow (again, little by little so it is not too overwhelming) until you are happy that it is a nice soft aqua blue.
  3. Taking your fine paintbrush, start painting the background behind the buildings.
  4. When you have gone all around the edges, you can paint the whole background with your larger brush.
  5. Whilst you wait for the paint to dry, it’s time to cut out the little clouds. If you have drawn some chimneys, it might be nice to add some little plumes of smoke (these look better torn rather than cut)
  6. Have a little play with positioning before glueing them down.

And there you have it! How does it look? I bet you are surprised at how fabulous it is. See? I told you you would be proud of it! xxx

Community

One of the best things about being part of Sketchbook Club, is the fabulous way we can all show each other our Sketchbook pages. It’s so wonderful to get instant feedback about your artwork, not only is it hugely confidence building (very important!) but it is also a great way to ask people’s opinions and seek advice.

This module’s Instagram hashtag is #SketchbookClubHouses.
